Under highly-rated head coach Vlos Molnar (Boland Landbou old boy and former head coach at his alma mater), Hoërskool Diamantveld of KImberley have enjoyed two 80% winning ratio seasons now, which included a first ever Kovsies title in 2025.
The Diamonds had an outstanding pre-season, described as one of the toughest the young coach have experienced. The focus extended beyond physical conditioning, with significant emphasis placed on team culture and the mental development of the players.
A full-time mental performance coach has been introduced to the programme — an investment that is already yielding clear benefits. The belief within the camp is that this holistic approach represents the future of schoolboy coaching. It is no longer enough to prepare players purely for what happens on the field; they must also be equipped to handle setbacks, manage success and grow into well-rounded young men.
Over the past three years, Diamantveld’s rugby programme has evolved significantly. The progress is attributed not to individuals, but to collective alignment throughout the structure — from the governing body down to the U14 coaches. Experienced Head of Sport Oloff Bergh and the energetic Head of Rugby Deon Carney (acquired from Noord-Kaap where he made a name for himself via great work) continue to provide strong leadership, while the guidance of headmaster Francois de Kock, who brings extensive schoolboy rugby experience, adds further stability.
At first-team level, Bok Markram and George Whitehead are doing sterling work, while young coach Ruan Vink is making a strong impact with the second team. Importantly, the U14 and U15 structures are fully aligned with the way the first team intends to play. That unity of vision has eliminated egos and created a programme where every coach works for the benefit of the school and its learners.
Looking ahead to Saturday’s clash against Hoërskool Monument, Diamantveld view the encounter as a valuable benchmark. Monument are renowned for their powerful forward pack and pace out wide, making them one of the most balanced sides in schoolboy rugby. The expectation is a fiercely physical contest — the kind that defines South African school rugby — and an opportunity for Diamantveld to measure themselves against the very best.

After two difficult seasons in 2024 and 2025, there is a renewed sense of direction at Hoërskool Monument.
The dip in performance at 1st XV level was evident, with last year’s matric group regarded as relatively modest by Monnas standards. Yet, beneath the surface, there were encouraging signs. Performances improved as the season progressed and, importantly, 16 players from that squad return in 2026. Among them are several provincial representatives who have featured for the Golden Lions at U16 and U17 level — a core that offers both quality and continuity. Their progress will be tested immediately, with a demanding encounter against Diamantveld awaiting as their first major challenge of the season — a fixture that should provide an early indication of just how far this group has come.
Pre-season preparations have been excellent. The conditioning base has been laid; however, a congested schedule — with athletics commitments on Wednesdays and trials on Thursdays — has limited valuable match practice. That lack of game time may present an early challenge, but the physical groundwork appears solid.
Crucially, the 1st XV coaching staff remains unchanged, bringing much-needed stability after a baptism-of-fire introduction for Head Coach Jannie du Plessis. Hardworking hands on Director of Rugby Reinhard Gerber assists him, along with a good coaching team. There have been a few structural adjustments from U14 level upwards, aimed at strengthening alignment within the system. The prospect of a new, highly motivated headmaster who understands the Monnas culture well also adds optimism and clarity of vision.
There is a clear sense that Monument are back on the right track. With a more settled environment and a promising group coming through, the task now is less about rebuilding and more about reinforcing standards and restoring the culture that has long defined Monnas rugby.

Tebay, Cumbria: At this in-between moment where it’s both winter and spring, I’m reminded that nothing is permanent in farmingTo make our new hedgerows as diverse as possible, we are planting a fruit tree every 200 metres in them, and last winter we planted a new apple and damson orchard at Low Park, our abandoned farm. This morning, I am popping some additional fruit trees into the hedges and checking on the orchard. The trees have been sourced from damson growers in the Lyth Valley and the apple trees from a local orchard group. When I arrive at Low Park, which is nearby in the Lune gorge, I am cheered to see that some primroses are already flowering in the orchard as it is so sheltered. Elsewhere, winter still has us in its grip, with snow earlier in the week on the fells. As well as the primroses, my eye is drawn to some almost fluorescent orange fungi on some deadwood, which I believe is witches’ butter. Continue reading...
